I. Swedish Origins. The story behind this famous hymn involves a long journey, beginning in Sweden, where the original form of the text was written by Carl Boberg (1859-1940). Boberg's text began "O store Gud" and was first published on the front page of the newspaper Mönsterås Tidningen, 13 Mar. 1886 (Fig. 1), in nine stanzas of six lines.. Boberg was born and raised in Mönsterås.

O Store Gud (O Great God) was a poem written by Carl Boberg, Mönsterås (south-eastern Sweden) in 1885. It was a rather long poem. There are altogether nine stanzas in this poem. The poem was sung in a church in Sweden in 1888 to a Swedish folk tune. It was said to be a paraphrase of Psalm 8 and was used in the underground church in the late 1880s.

' That evening Carl Boberg wrote the poem, 'O Store Gud' (O Great God) based on this experience. Carl Boberg first published "O Store Gud" in the Mönsterås News on 13 March 1886. He later published it again in 1891 in Witness of the Truth, a weekly newspaper that Boberg edited.

O Store Gud was translated from Swedish to German by Baptist nobleman, Manfred von Glehn (1867-1924), and in German is known as "Wie groß bist Du". The German hymn was translated to Russian as "Velikiy Bog" (Великий Бог - Great God) in 1912 by Protestant hymn-writer and translator Ivan S. Prokhanov (1869-1935).

"How Great Thou Art" was originally written as the Swedish poem "O Store Gud" in 1885 by Carl Boberg. It was first translated into english by E. Gustav Johnson in 1925. In 1949 missionary Stuart K. Hine loosely translated Bobergs poem into english and added the 3rd verse and melody known today.
